Koh Wua Ta Lap: The Heart of the Park

Home to the famous 500m panoramic viewpoint, Bua Boke cave, and the national park headquarters. The must-visit island for every Ang Thong day trip.

What is Koh Wua Ta Lap?

Koh Wua Ta Lap (Sleeping Cow Island) is the largest and most important island in the archipelago. It serves as the headquarters for Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park and is where most full-day tours spend the largest portion of their time.

Whether you want to challenge yourself on the steep nature trail, explore ancient limestone caves, or simply relax on a pristine white-sand beach, Koh Wua Ta Lap offers the most diverse range of activities in the park.

  • The 500m Viewpoint: The iconic shot of the 42 islands.
  • Bua Boke Cave: Stunning stalactites and stalagmites.
  • HQ Beach: Large, clean beach perfect for swimming and relaxing.
  • Dusky Leaf Monkeys: Often spotted in the trees near the visitor center.
  • Hiking to the 500m Viewpoint

The absolute highlight of the park, but it requires effort and preparation.

    The Trail Breakdown

The trail is a series of steep limestone steps and fixed ropes. It is divided into several resting points:

    1

    100m – 200m

Relatively easy start, but the humidity hits quickly. Good views of the HQ beach.

    2

    350m

The "Intermediate View." Many stop here — the view is already spectacular.

    3

    500m — The Summit

The final push is steep. At the top, a wooden platform offers a 360° view of the archipelago.

    Hiking Essentials

Footwear: Do NOT attempt in flip-flops. Trainers or Teva-style sandals are vital.
Water: Take at least 500ml of water with you. You will sweat significantly.
Time: Allow 45–60 minutes for the round trip plus photo time.

    Bua Boke Cave (Lotus Cave)

Located about 1km from the HQ, this cave is a hidden gem. It takes about 15-20 minutes to reach via a separate jungle trail. Inside, you'll find impressive geological formations that resemble lotus flowers (hence the name).

Note: Most group tours don't automatically include the cave because of the time required. If you want to see it, you'll likely need to choose it *instead* of the viewpoint hike, or be very fast!

    Cave Tips

Bring a torch (though most guides carry one) and be prepared for some slightly slippery rocks. Not recommended for those with claustrophobia.

Plan Your Visit to Koh Wua Ta Lap

The best way to see the island is on a full-day tour from Koh Samui or Koh Phangan.
