It's the right default choice for most visitors.
That said, the "best" trip really depends on what you want: Ang Thong for scenery and adventure, Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan for the clearest water, Koh Tan & Koh Madsum (Pig Island) for families and calm seas, and a land tour for a non-boat day.

Samui's closest neighbour is a short ferry away — beaches, waterfalls, temples and markets. Most guides recommend staying overnight rather than day-tripping if the Full Moon Party is the draw. Combine it with a direct Ang Thong tour from Koh Phangan for a two-island itinerary.
