Yes, you can visit Ang Thong directly from Koh Phangan. Here's how the tours work — departures, boats, prices, fees and whether it's worth ferrying to Koh Samui first. Updated July 2026.
Absolutely. Daily full-day speedboat and big-boat tours run directly from Koh Phangan to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park — this is a real, bookable product, not just a Koh Samui offering. You don't need to ferry to Samui first.
Koh Phangan is one of the closest departure points to the park. It sits about 32 km from Ang Thong, versus 28 km from Koh Samui — only marginally farther. By speedboat the crossing takes roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Book a direct tour from Thong Sala Pier (about 1,700–2,200 THB by speedboat), budget the 300 THB park fee separately in cash, pack reef-safe sunscreen, and aim for February–April. Ferrying to Samui first rarely pays off.
Koh Phangan to the park
By speedboat each way
The main hub is Thong Sala Pier, with hotel pickup from most of the island.
Pickups from Thong Nai Pan (often +300 THB), Haad Khuad (Bottle Beach), Haad Khom and Haad Yuan/Haad Tien may be excluded or surcharged — guests there sometimes make their own way to the pier. Confirm your beach at booking.
A few listings are run by Samui companies that pick up Samui guests too, then stop at Koh Phangan en route — meaning you actually board at the more convenient point. Verify the operator and route.
A full-day speedboat trip runs about 7.5–9 hours door-to-door. Here's a representative schedule.
Transfer to Thong Sala Pier and check-in.
Speedboat across to the park, arriving around 10:00.
First snorkel stop at Koh Wao or Koh Tai Plao, then the Emerald Lagoon viewpoint on Koh Mae Ko.
Thai lunch, then kayaking, beach time or the steep viewpoint hike on Koh Wua Talap.
Depart the park and arrive back at Koh Phangan by 16:30–17:00.
Reviewers regularly mention a bumpy 45-minute crossing home even in good weather. If you're prone to motion sickness, medicate beforehand and favour the larger, more stable big boat on calm days.
Two strong, well-reviewed direct departures. Prices and dates update in real time.
The most-reviewed direct Koh Phangan departure: a full day covering the Emerald Lake, snorkelling, kayaking and the viewpoint hike, with lunch and Thong Sala pickup included. A dependable all-rounder for first-timers.
A kayaking-focused speedboat trip built around the park's caves, cliffs and the Emerald Lagoon — great if paddling and active time at the islands are your priority.
Koh Phangan's direct market is well established but smaller. If your date is sold out, the ~30-minute ferry to Koh Samui opens up a much wider choice — see our Koh Samui ultimate guide.
Koh Phangan pricing is broadly comparable to Koh Samui — there's no real cost penalty for departing here.
| Tour type | Typical price (per adult) |
|---|---|
| Speedboat day tour | ~1,700–2,200 THB |
| Big-boat / wooden-boat tour | ~1,500–2,000 THB |
| Private charter (group of 6–8) | ~8,000–20,000 THB / boat |
Most Koh Phangan operators charge the 300 THB adult / 150 THB child national park fee in cash on the day — either at their office in the morning or at the ranger station on Koh Mae Ko. A few big-boat operators include it, so always confirm at booking. There are no ATMs in the park.
Seasonality is the same as from Koh Samui — the park closes for the monsoon.
Calmest seas and the best visibility — ideal for the crossing, snorkelling and kayaking.
Greener, quieter and cheaper, with occasional rain and the odd rougher day.
Annual monsoon closure. Reopening is weather-dependent, sometimes as late as 20–23 December.
Since 16 October 2025, marine parks actively enforce a ban on chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-MBC and butylparaben), with fines up to 100,000 THB. Several Koh Phangan operators now list mineral, reef-safe sunscreen as mandatory.
Basing yourself on Koh Phangan opens up more than just Ang Thong.
From Koh Phangan, the star day trips beyond the Ang Thong Marine Park tour are the reef-diving and snorkelling hotspots of Koh Tao and the postcard three-way sandbar at Koh Nang Yuan — the region's best underwater scenery. You can also hop across to Koh Samui for a wider choice of departures, book a private speedboat charter around the archipelago, or add a sunset cruise, sea-kayaking adventure or snorkelling trip. Live options across all of these are below.
